By Allison SkeeteSpecial To CWNNCaribWorldNews, NEW YORK, NY, Weds. Sept. 8, 2010: After more than 30 years, young Guyanese Sprinter Jeremy Bascom is giving the South American nation of Guyana high hopes for attaining some athletic attention in track and field.Bascom recently broke the 32 year old national record held by James Gilks when he ran the 100 meter sprint in 10 seconds flat. His accomplishment came at the New Jersey Open and Master`s Championship races held back in June of this summer in Ramapo, New Jersey. The record set by Gilks in 1978 was 10.19 seconds. Confirmation by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) of the fast time and the meet ratifies the feats of track athletes to give them accreditation. The 10 seconds run places Bascom 13th on the fastest man list which puts him fifth behind the current reigning king of the track and field, Jamaica`s Usain Bolt.Born in Linden in Guyana, Bascom emigrated to the U.S in 1997 when he was 14. He`s won several races at meets and championship events in track field in the Northern Eastern Conference, the Outdoor College championship, and the former Long Island University graduate also took home a win at the distinguished Penn Relay games. Bascom earned his college degree in Business Management in 2006.When asked what his ultimate goal in the sport is, Bascom replied: `To run in the Olympics.` That is the apex for him, he says, while realizing that there is more recognition of the sport in Europe. He`s slated to take part in the Commonwealth Games set for October 2010 in New Delhi, India where he would replace an injured Marian Burnett for Team Guyana. Four identified spots on the national Commonwealth Games contingent have been listed for the Athletics Association. The other three spots went to Aliann Pompey, Cleveland Forde and Adam Harris.

CaribWorldNews, KINGSTON, Jamaica, Weds. Sept. 8, 2010, (Panos): Residents of Jeffrey Town, Jamaica were a jumping mass of colors recently as they danced to the tunes of their favourite entertainers at the Voices for Climate Change Education Project`s third community intervention in St. Mary.`This is truly one of the best concerts I have been to in awhile,` said Marcia Davis, a Jeffrey Town community member, who loudly screamed for more from the Climate Champions. Among the group of entertainers who rocked the stage at Jeffrey Town were 2006 and 2008 rising stars winners One Third and Cameal Davis, Lloyd Lovindeer and Pam Hall. Also among the acts were upcoming artistes Fyah Juice, Amique, Pampi Judah and Heather Harding also known as Boom Dawn. Jeffrey Town also saw performances from their own DJ Itamari, Turban and their reigning Farm Queen Olivia Derrett. The Climate champions are among a group of over 24 entertainers, including Tony Rebel, Gem Myers, Queen Ifrika, Omari and others who are a part of the Voices for Climate Change Education project. These artistes have attended workshops and recorded songs aimed at educating the population on issues relating to climate change. The concert was emceed by veteran broadcaster Patrick Lafayette and rising stars sweetheart K`Alee. The day started with a tree planting exercise where the Voices for Climate Change Education artistes and youngsters from the community planted over ten shade trees in the school yard at the Jeffrey Town Primary School. The trees were donated by the Forestry Department of Jamaica. Immediately following the tree planting was a discussion on the farming community`s knowledge of climate change issues and an interactive session with Michael Myles from the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) on practices that can be adopted to protect the environment.`I am endorsing the Voices for Climate Change Education Project fully` said Robert `Bobby` Montague, Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister with responsibility for Local Government and Member of Parliament for Western, St. Mary. Montague believes that the project `gives people the opportunity to carry home the issue at their level in their community.` He was one of the hundreds attending the Voices Projects third community discussion at the Jeffrey Town Primary School, St. Mary. The project is being implemented by lead agencies Panos Caribbean and the National Environmental Education Committee. It is funded by the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica, Christian Aid, the Bureau of Standards, the Meteorological Office of Jamaica and other critical sponsors.

The singer, is set to release her fifth album titled `Loud,` for the Christmas holidays. `Loud` is slated to hit stores in November and comes on the heels of her fourth disc, `Rated R.`

Yesterday, RiRi released her new single, `Only Girl (In the World)` on Ryan Seacrest`s morning radio show. The single was produced by Stargate, the same Grammy-winning producing team responsible for some of her biggest hits, including `Rude Boy,` `Unfaithful,` `Hate That I Love You` and the dance anthem `Please Don`t Stop the Music.`

`Want you to make me feel, like I`m the only girl in the world,` she sings. `Like I`m the only one that you`ll ever love, like I`m the only one who knows your heart.`

`Get loud, everybody. Get crazy. Get excited. `Cause I`m pumped. I`m just gonna be me,` she told fansite RihannaDaily.com during a live chat. `I`m done recording the whole album … I made sure not to let you down with my music! You guys are always defending me, so now you`ve got some great songs to justify it. I didn`t want to go backward and remake [2007`s] `Good Girl Gone Bad.` I wanted the next step in the evolution of Rihanna, and it`s perfect for us.`

CaribWorldNews, BROOKLYN, NY, Weds. Sept. 8, 2010: There will be no more jail time for raunchy Trinidad-American Rapper Foxy Brown.

Brown was on Tuesday spared jail after prosecutors dropped all but one charge against her in Brooklyn Supreme Court. It was a post birthday present for Brown, born Inga Marchand, 32, who was only indicted for allegedly violating a court order that barred her from contacting a neighbor in Prospect Heights.

If convicted of that count, Brown faces community service. A grand jury failed to indict her on two felonies and three of four misdemeanors.

Afterwards, she blamed her legal trouble on people`s `jealousy` of her.

`I always knew I was innocent. And this is all about jealousy,` she said, without elaborating.

However, Thomas, in an address to the nation last night, said hotels benefitting will have to spend 90 percent of the service charge with workers.

`This safeguard is meant to ensure that the service charge collected is paid to the workers,` the PM said.

He also granted a 50 percent rebate in the VAT on hotel occupancy for the months of September, October and November.

Thomas added that his government will continue to support the expansion of airlift to the island. So far this year, the Thomas administration says it has spent $8 million on direct airlift to Grenada from North America and Europe.
